HISTORY
Tempe was founded in 1871 as Hayden's Ferry, in honor of Charles Trumbull Hayden, who owned a flour mill and a ferry that ran across the Salt River. In 1879, it was renamed Tempe (Tem-PEE) after the Vale of Tempe in ancient Greece. In 1886 ASU's progenitor, the Arizona Territorial Normal School, was founded and later became Arizona State University.
