HISTORY
Tempe was founded in 1871 as Hayden's Ferry, in honor of Charles Trumbull Hayden, who owned a flour mill and a ferry that ran across the Salt River. In 1879, it was renamed Tempe (Tem-PEE) after the Vale of Tempe in ancient Greece. In 1886 ASU's progenitor, the Arizona Territorial Normal School, was founded and later became Arizona State University.

- Tempe Town Lake lake is a popular destination for relaxation and recreation. It is a beautiful place to fish, run, bike, boat and hike Tempe Town Lake video! Many annual events are held at the lake; including the Arizona Dragon Boat Festival, the July 4th Festival, Oktoberfest, Ironman Arizona, Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade, Rock n’ Roll Marathon and more!

It also hosts two major annual Arts Festivals, in spring and fall: the Tempe Festival of the Arts that feature live entertainment, street performers and hundreds of artists.

- Tempe Marketplace, a very popular outdoor shopping, dining and entertainment district is located at McClintock Drive and Rio Salado Parkway.
